Item 2010.052 – Custom-designed necklace by Della Mano Designs, Cape Elizabeth, ME
As described by the artist:  Gravestones made in the late 1600s to early 1800s offer delightfully imaginative artwork. From the death’s heads of early stones to the soul effigies of later years, each hand-carved image is unique. To create this necklace, I chose a stone with an image or name that appealed to me. I photographed the stone and recreated the artwork. I then etched the artwork into a solid brass disk with I patinated and polished. I added a pearl to symbolize passage through the pearly gates of heaven.

Item 2010.065  – Limited edition print – The House at Cushing’s Point – artist Paul Black
Known for his original impressionist oil paintings of the Greater Portland and coastal Maine areas, artist Paul Black has a home and studio right here in South Portland, Maine.  After hearing about the South Portland Historical Society’s capital campaign to acquire the Cushing’s Point House, Black painted this inspired image of the Cushing’s Point House and adjacent Bug Light Park to donate as a fundraiser.

In addition to the original oil painting, Black himself commissioned a limited edition print for the Society, overseeing the production process from start to finish.  He then donated the original painting and the prints to be sold to raise funds for the Society’s acquisition of the Cushing’s Point House.  This is a tremendous gift given to our Society, even more so considering that Black is a painter of original oils and does not make prints of his work.

One of the great things about the state of Maine is that its inherent beauty throughout the four changing seasons serves as inspiration to many artists.  We in South Portland are especially blessed and proud to have Paul Black make his home in our midst.  To learn more about Paul Black and his impressionist oil paintings of Maine, check out his website at www.paulblack.com

Item 2010.066  – South Portland Shipyards of World War II DVD Maine
During World War II, South Portland was the site of Todd-Bath Iron Shipbuilding, South Portland Shipbuilding and New England Shipbuilding Corporations.  These WWII shipyards built Ocean and Liberty ships to supply the Allies during the war.  The construction and operation of these shipyards had a major impact on the community of South Portland, which lost an entire neighborhood to make way for the yards, and which gained many new neighborhoods which started as housing for the shipyard workers and their families.  Over 30,000 people were employed by the shipyard at its peak, working in three shifts, 24 hours a day.

*This auction is for a DVD recording of an oral history event.  On August 16, 2007, the South Portland Historical Society hosted a special event, known as an Evening Chat, where former workers at the South Portland shipyards were invited to come and share their first-hand accounts of building Liberty ships during the war.

Item 2010.072 – Fore Street Restaurant, Portland, ME - $50 gift certificate

At the Fore Street Restaurant, we believe that good food travels the shortest possible distance between the farm and the table. Our menu is founded upon the very best raw materials from a community of Maine farmers, fishermen, foragers, and cheesemakers, who are also our friends and neighbors. Most of these Maine foods are organically grown or harvested wild, each brought to us at the peak of its season. Our cooks are constantly inspired and excited by the variety and taste of these local ingredients.

Fore Street's interior surrounds a unique brick, and soapstone hearth consisting of a wood-burning oven, grill, and turnspit, visible from most tables. Hardwood and apple wood fires cook and flavor the seafood, meats, game, and vegetables that have made Fore Street a New England destination.

In 2002, Fore Street was named Number 16 in Gourmet Magazine's Top Fifty Restaurants of the United States. In 2004, Chef-partner Sam Hayward was named Best Chef: Northeast by the James Beard Foundation.
